A man found dead in his front yard earlier this week in Putnam County accidentally shot himself, according to authorities.
Cookeville police believe Darren Cooper, 53, shot himself while taking a hunting rifle out of his car Wednesday.
They said his hunting rifle somehow discharged while it was in a hard case, causing a fatal wound to the man's chest.
The Cookeville Herald Citizen reported Cooper's body was discovered by his family members next to his car in the Forest Hills subdivision.
Police don't suspect foul play, but an officer told the Herald Citizen that an autopsy will be performed to rule out anything else that may have contributed to his death.
