Animal shelter damaged in fire seeks homes for animals

HOPKINSVILLE, KY (WSMV) -

A fire that damaged the Christian County Animal Shelter Monday is still under investigation. Even though all 225 animals were saved, the shelter still faces a problem. Workers say those animals need to be adopted or placed in foster homes.

On Monday, the Bowling Green Humane Society picked up puppies from the shelter while residents began stepping up to take in many more animals. Shelter workers say they're still without electricity, and even when they get back up and running, they'll only have half of the operational space.

Both wives of soldiers currently deployed to Afghanistan, Kim McMasters and Malarie Ward said they know the importance of helping those in need.

"She's got the good backyard, and I've got the kids that really want to help the animals," said McMasters. "Together we can do something good."

McMasters and Ward were only two of dozens upon dozens at the shelter Wednesday.

"A man called me from Alberta, Canada today," said shelter director Irene Grace. "I got calls from Sacremento, Washington, D.C, Louisville. The Humane Society of the United States has called."

With all the help, the shelter is already down from 225 animals to only 35 dogs and 10 cats left.

"This is unbelievable," said Grace. "This is 75 percent above, no, I'm going to say 90 percent above normal. Just thanks to everyone. From the people across the street to Alberta, Canada, just thanks to everyone."

If you want to adopt any of those remaining animals, shelter officials said the best way to contact them is through their Facebook page; https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Christian-County-Animal-Shelter/214216555270170?fref=ts
