(RNN) – The 7-foot Canadian export with the streaming, shoulder-length locks and a sweet shooting touch has led top-ranked Gonzaga to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA.
For the season, he averaged about 18 points on 66 percent shooting. His true shooting percentage, which takes into account field goals, 3-pointers and free throws, was even higher (72.5 percent).
He's a fine ball-handler and he runs the floor like a guard. He has already graduated with a degree in accounting and is working on an MBA. His father, Ken Olynyk, was a candidate for the Canadian Olympic basketball team and is the athletic director of Thompson Rivers University in Kamloomps. He coaches his daughter Maya's basketball team.
Olynyk redshirted in the middle of his college career, using that time to work on his game and his body, both of which vastly improved. He was playing behind Robert Sacre, who was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers last year.
Olynyk and Zags coach Mark Few agreed the redshirt year would benefit both him and the team.
His outstanding junior season and his improvement on the offensive end of the court has put him on the verge of being a lottery pick in the NBA draft, and Gonzaga is among the favorites to make it to the Final Four.
