SPRING HILL, TN (WSMV) -

Spring Hill's mayor said Tuesday a national company has signed a letter of intent to build a movie theater in a new development at The Crossings shopping center.

In a press release, Mayor Mike Dinwiddie said, "A movie theater is probably the most anticipated and desired addition to the city by our residents, and I look forward to seeing the plans brought to the Planning Commission in the coming months."

While Dinwiddie would not comment on specifics, in a site diagram provided by Tarver Properties, Inc., of Knoxville, a logo for Carmike Cinemas of Columbus, GA, was featured. The 12-screen theater would accompany other new retail and restaurants in the Saturn Parkway - Kedron Road area.

Bill Stone, executive vice president of Excel Trust, Inc., the current owner of much of the The Crossings in Spring Hill, told the Columbia Daily Herald that he had heard nothing of plans to construct a theater in the development.

Spring Hill codes officials told the paper that the property long considered for the theater included more than 50 acres adjacent to The Crossings on the south side, but that while the land is zoned for commercial use, it has not yet been approved for development.

Furthermore, codes officials said they have not yet seen any applications or documents related to the mayor's announcement.

If completed, the theater would be the first one in Spring Hill.
