A Murfreesboro woman said she feared the worst when she heard her 12-year-old son had been shot at home. Police said someone opened fire from outside the family's home while two babies were inside.
Now, investigators are having a difficult time understanding why someone would do this.
They say the drive-by shooting on Wingate Street took place in broad daylight, and there is no apparent motive.
"He was laying on the couch, and he heard the gunshot," said the child's mother, Antoinette Johnson.
Johnson said she is just grateful her sectional sofa was well-made.
"The bullet that hit him didn't go all the way through the couch," she said.
Johnson's son, Tre Evans, was grazed on the back by a bullet after someone sprayed the home with bullets Monday about 3:15 p.m.
"It's my child," Johnson said. "You try to keep them away from harm, and it comes to your home."
Johnson's two grandchildren, ages 1 and 2, were also in the living room, playing on the floor at the time of the shooting.
"[Tre] said he jumped up and grabbed the two babies," Johnson said. "He told my oldest son, 'My back, my back!'"
Police say it's been several years since a major crime on Wingate Street, and they are wondering why this house was targeted.
"Right now, investigators are trying to put the pieces together to find out exactly who committed this and what their motive was for committing this crime," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.
Johnson has only lived in the home five months, and neighbors wonder if the intended target may have been a previous tenant.
"It concerns me to know someone would do something like that. But as far as me being afraid, no," said neighbor Anna Turner.
For now, Johnson is just trying to make sense of what happened, knowing things could have ended much worse.
"I'm still not understanding," she said.
Witnesses were able to get police a description of a vehicle speeding away from the house. No arrests have yet been made.
