COOKEVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A section of a state highway in Putnam County closed at noon Tuesday to clear debris from a rockslide Monday evening.

The incident occurred on Highway 84 near the Overton County line at about 5:40 p.m. about a  mile outside Monterey.

In addition to some trees and mud, the slide consisted of one large boulder that slid onto the shoulder of the road. The boulder is about 40 feet long, 20 feet high and 15-20 feet wide, said state officials.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said a contract crew will use a track hoe with a hammer attachment to break up the boulder so it can be hauled away.

Closures and detours will be set up at State Route 284 in Overton County and State Route 84 in Putnam County in Monterey.

During the closure, residents who live on this section of State Route 84 will be allowed to access their homes, said TDOT.

The closure will be in effect until 6:00 p.m. Tuesday. Work will resume Wednesday at 7 a.m., when the road will once again be closed to traffic.

State officials said they believe work should be completed by Wednesday, but in the event that it is not, the 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. schedule will be followed until the work is completed.
