NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Officers assisting a stranded driver were involved in an accident early Saturday morning on I-40 near mile marker 214.

Hermitage Officer William Wright and Canine Officer John Young were helping a driver change a flat tire when a car traveling westbound on I-40 hit Officer Young's vehicle, according to police.

The police car was pushed into the broken down vehicle. Officer Young's canine partner, Echo, was in the back seat of the patrol car when it was hit. Echo was transported to a veterinary office for evaluation.

Police said a veterinarian examined Echo and he had no broken bones and no internal injuries. The dog was kept overnight at the vet's office as a precaution.

Young sustained minor injuries during the crash. He was treated and released from the hospital, according to Capt. Ken Walburn.

The driver of the second vehicle, the one that hit the patrol car, is facing DUI charges.
