DALTON, GA (WRCB)-  Following the sudden retirement of Danny Hayes, Whitfield County School Board members unanimously selected Judy Gilreath as their next superintendent.  The decision was made at a called meeting Thursday afternoon.  Hayes announced his retirement earlier this month after his wife accepted a superintendent's position in Crisp County, Georgia.  Hayes had led the school district since 2010.  Gilreath was sworn in Friday by Probate Judge Sheri Blevins.

Gilreath, who has served as assistant superintendent of Student Support Services in Whitfield County since 2006, launched her career in education in 1973 teaching science in Chattooga County Schools. A past principal at Pleasant Grove Elementary, her experience includes five years teaching in Walker County Schools and a stint as an adjunct professor at the University of West Georgia and Dalton State College.

The Board's next public meeting is for a work session at Valley Point Middle School on Monday, March 25, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
