Firefighters work to put out a fire at the Weatherly Walk apartments
FAYETTEVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
If it wasn't for the quick thinking of Chuck Faison, three people trapped inside their apartment complex at Weatherly Walk may not be alive to thank him.
The three-alarm fire broke out at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday and quickly spread throughout the entire complex. High winds fanned the flames and forced firefighters to protect nearby buildings from catching fire.
"There were flames everywhere," Faison said. "She wanted to jump outside with the baby, and I told her, ‘One at a time, you throw the baby first and I'll get you.' She held the baby outside the window and I said, ‘Let her go, let her go,' she let the baby go, I caught the baby, cradled the baby, took the baby out."
Faison said the mother then hung outside the window, feet to the ground, and let go. He caught her and kept going to other apartments to search for more people.
That's when Faison said he broke a window and saw an elderly woman inside and pulled her out as well.
"I am just happy everyone is alright, I feel good about that, I wouldn't change it for the world, I would do it all over again, if I had too," Faison said.
The Red Cross is helping fire victims find a place to stay. The apartment complex also offered vacant apartments in the same complex to people displaced.
Ten apartment buildings burned. More than 20 people lost their homes during the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
