NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Two people from central Europe have been sentenced for their roles in an Internet-based fraud scheme involving opening bank accounts with false passports.
U.S. District Judge Aleta A. Trauger said 34-year-old Beatrix Boka of Hungary and 40-year-old Aleksander Kunkin of Serbia played small, but crucial roles in a scheme that defrauded 36 people. Prosecutors say the victims believed they were wiring money to buy vehicles from eBay or AutoTrader.
Trauger on Friday sentenced Boka to three years in prison. Kunkin received 46 months in prison. Both must also pay about $464,000 in restitution.
The Tennessean reported that Trauger recommended Kunkin receive mental health treatment while incarcerated as close to Ashland, Ky., as possible. She recommended Boka be incarcerated close to Toronto, where Boka's mother lives.
