A tour guide at one of Nashville's top visitor attractions has now attracted a piece of the national spotlight.
Steven Whitson has a Hollywood opportunity in his future, which is big stuff for the 31-year-old from Trimble, TN, who never really saw any of this coming.
Whitson has plenty to talk about every day as a tour guide at the Fontanel Mansion, Barbara Mandrell's former home.
"This is the master bathroom - how many people can you fit in your bathroom?" he joked on a recent tour.
Whitson gets giggles out of this gig, but then about 30 minutes in, he'll pull a guitar off the wall and the laughter stops.
"The people that come in here are totally shocked by me grabbing the guitar and singing," Whitson said. "My mom said I started singing with the hymnal turned upside down in church when I was 3 years old, and I haven't shut up since."
The job of showing off Fontanel is what got him to Music City after a singing stint in Pigeon Forge.
"I felt like I had made it when I moved to Nashville, because I was so happy and happiness is making it for me in this business," he said.
Now, his happiness has a Hollywood element. Whitson is heading there this month to sing on Marie Osmond's variety show for the Hallmark Channel.
It turns out that show's producer took the Fontanel tour on a recent visit to town, heard Whitson sing and booked him.
That's not a bad gig for the Dyer County kid, who was once the target of teasing as an overweight, country music obsessed teenager.
"I was definitely country when country wasn't cool," Whitson said. "I grew up and people made fun of me in school, and I was told I would never amount to anything."
Now, look who's laughing.
Who knows where the Marie Osmond appearance will lead, but for now he just plans to remain the most requested tour guide at Fontanel.
