Knox County sheriff cancels deputies request

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Knox County Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones says he will rescind his request to hire 20 more deputies to provide school security.

Jones told the Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/Zpk4tm) his department called the county finance director and told him the request for more officers would be dropped.

Jones wanted the officers to add to the two dozen deputies already assigned to county public schools, but decided to pull back the request after the school system announced plans to hire 58 security officers.

Jones had estimated the cost of hiring the added deputies at about $2 million with continuing annual costs of up to $1.5 million.
