NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Vanderbilt will host Mississippi on the opening night of college football, the second straight season the Commodores have opened Southeastern Conference play on the first day of the season.

The game originally scheduled for Aug. 31 now will be played Aug. 29 kicking off at 9:15 p.m. ET, officials announced Tuesday.

Coach James Franklin says opening on Thursday night offers both academic and athletic challenges for the Commodores who are excited to play the SEC's first game.

Vanderbilt opened the 2012 season hosting South Carolina in a 17-13 loss.

The Commodores finished the season ranked 23rd with an SEC-best 7-game winning streak and a 9-4 record that was the program's best since 1915. Ole Miss went 7-6 and beat Pittsburgh in the BBVA Compass Bowl.
