FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - A new general is coming to Fort Campbell to serve as the acting senior commander while the 101st Airborne Division is deployed to Afghanistan.
A ceremony is planned for Tuesday morning to welcome Brig. Gen. Mark Stammer to serve as the acting senior commander at the installation on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line while the division's headquarters unit is deployed to Afghanistan for a year.
Maj. Gen. James C. McConville and his staff are leaving to command troops in eastern Afghanistan during the transition to Afghan security forces. About 5,000 troops from Fort Campbell are currently in Afghanistan, although many more remain at home.
Stammer comes to Fort Campbell from Fort Bliss, Texas, where he recently served as the Joint Task Force North Commander.
