An ongoing Channel 4 I-Team investigation into both property and legal problems with sinkholes has found a main structural foundation company reporting increasing cases of sinkholes in Middle Tennessee.
Our investigation found people struggling with the problem three years ago have yet to find remedies.
In 2010, the Channel 4 I-Team documented a sinkhole under a house in Brentwood.
The sinkhole sits directly under a spare bedroom. The collapse of a bedroom where a man was sleeping in Seffner, FL, last week is renewing concerns for the homeowner.
The homeowner has been battling with his insurance company for years to cover the damages, and finally will get some relief next week when a structural foundation company is set to start repairs.
A lawsuit we first discovered in 2010 in Rutherford County, where a homeowner is suing his builder because of a sinkhole under the house, is still being battled in the courts.
United Structural Systems, a foundation repair company that has become a specialist in sinkholes in Middle Tennessee, reports they handled 12 sinkholes in 2010 and 30 in 2012.
"The May 5 floods, combined with subsequent droughts, that fall in 2010 and last fall in 2011, the extreme weather changes has caused sinkholes to become more prevalent," said Kenny Williams with United Structural Systems.
