Putnam County gets first paid firefighters

Posted: Updated:

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Putnam County has its first paid firefighters.

According to the Cookeville Herald-Citizen, five full time and five part-time firefighters began shifts on Friday.

Prior to this month, the county of about 62,000 residents depended on volunteer firefighters. The major city and county seat of Cookeville has a city fire department.

County Fire Chief Daryl Blair says the paid employees had been trained as volunteers, so they were ready to take on the new jobs.

The firefighters are stationed in Cookeville, which Blair says provides the best overall response time anywhere in the county.
