Investigators said an electrical problem is the possible cause of a deadly fire in Shelbyville that claimed the life of a 2-year-old girl on Saturday.
The child was identified as Bianca Sandoval.
Firefighters were called to a home on Hoover Street around 11 a.m. Saturday. When crews arrived, the child's grandmother was outside screaming for help.
"It was horrifying, knowing the baby was in there and the firefighters were trying to get to her," neighbor C.J. Intintoli said. "It was awful."
Intintoli first noticed something was wrong when he headed out to his truck this morning. But with flames already coming from the home, all he could do was call for help.
"I went over there. I couldn't get into the building, it was so hot," Intintoli said.
Fire crews rushed inside to try and save the toddler trapped inside, but it was too late. Neighbor Linda Stephens watched helplessly from her front porch.
"They covered the whole area," Stephens said. "They made us all come in, and they brought the child out."
Investigators said the child's grandmother usually kept the little girl on weekends while her mom was at work in Nashville. Firefighters believe the fire possibly started in area surrounding a wall heater in the room where the child was found.
"It's very horrible," Stephens said. "I just think the world of them."
Firefighters said the grandmother suffered minor burns and was taken to Heritage Medical Center for care.
Investigators do not suspect foul play. But due to the child's death, the state fire marshal's office is expected be out at the Shelbyville home Monday.
