Northern Middle Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau is under a winter weather advisory until noon Saturday. The advisory includes Nashville.
Middle Tennessee is seeing a mix of rain and snowflakes Friday evening, but ground temperatures will be near freezing, so little accumulation is expected.
By Saturday afternoon, 1/2 to 1" of accumulation is possible in Nashville with 1 to 2" in the higher elevations on the Cumberland Plateau.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities.
Nashville public schools have canceled after school & Saturday programs that require Metro Schools transportation.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation was busy beforehand, treating roads in anticipation of the wintry weather.
"Brine really works best when there is really no more than a tenth of an inch of rain. If there's any more rain than that predicted, brine really isn't as effective. So that's why with this system, where it's predicted to come in with snow in the beginning, we are going to be putting down brine to begin with," said TDOT spokeswoman Deanna Lambert.
Once the snow hits, TDOT brings out the salt, so crews will be on standby overnight, ready to go, if there are problems in the morning.
A cold weekend is in the forecast with temperatures in the mid to high 30s on Saturday and Sunday.
