MTSU professor plans trip without petroleum

Posted: Updated:

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee professor and researcher who drove cross country last year on just over two gallons of gasoline is set to do it again without petroleum.

Dr. Cliff Ricketts and a backup driver made the 2,600-mile run from Tybee Island, Ga., to Long Beach, Calif., in 2012 using a combination of 95% ethanol and 5% gasoline. They used 2.15 gallons.

The trip planned to begin March 9 will cover the same route.

But Ricketts said this time, the fuel sources will be solar and hydrogen, which was derived from water on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.

Ricketts and backup driver Terry Young will be driving a 1994 Toyota Tercel and a 2005 Toyota Prius on their journey.
