Last month many parents in Metro Nashville Public Schools began complaining to Channel 4 News that their children are being picked up late by their school bus and in some cases aren't being picked up at all.
School officials admitted then they were about 30 drivers short, but now the number of open slots has grown to 40.
A former driver said the late-running buses are a much bigger problem than most people realize.
"It's happening every day. It's happened every day for the past 2 1/2 years," said former driver Larry Weakley. "There were days before I resigned that I actually had three routes on one elementary school."
Weakley put in his last day at Metro last week and accepted a job at a private school. He said he could no longer handle the stress of doing the job of three people and being constantly berated by angry parents.
"It makes it hard on the school kids, because they're having to go get another route, and then get their assigned route. And the same thing's happening in the afternoon," Weakley said.
Current drivers say the drop in the number of drivers began more than two years ago when their workdays were trimmed from eight hours a day to seven. Since then, the school system has had a hard time catching up.
A spokesperson for Metro Schools said the cut in hours back in 2010 was something that was discussed at length and simply made more sense based on the number of hours drivers were actually working.
The district has seven drivers currently in training, and officials say they're currently hiring.
