Soldier home from war surprises children at school assembly

Posted: Updated:

It's a scene repeated hundreds of times in classrooms across the country as a special guest makes a surprise appearance: Nothing beats the joy in a child's face when seeing a mother or father return home from war.

Friday in Manchester, 1st Sgt. Galen Moran was the guest of honor after a seven-month deployment in Afghanistan.

"My son is kind of rambunctious, and my daughter is a daddy's girl. I don't know what the reaction will be," Moran said.

His wife, Brooke Moran, had a little better guess at how their children would respond.

"My son will be running around like a crazy man, and my daughter will be crying," she said.

Then, packed into a gymnasium lined with patriotic banners, students at Westwood Elementary recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the Star-Spangled Banner.

And when an educator asked both Moran children what they would say if they could talk to their dad, they didn't know their hero was in the hallway nearby, ready to spring his surprise.

As he walked into the gym, Galen Moran was greeted with a shocked, ecstatic embrace.

"About what I expected, my son being crazy and my daughter crying," Galen Moran said.

The soldier said now that he's home he is most excited for his wife to make one of her famous crawfish boils.
