NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
The superintendent of Metro public schools spoke Friday against state lawmakers' charter school authorizer bill.
The legislation, which was put on hold this week, would take away local school boards' power to approve charter schools.
Dr. Jesse Register said Metro Nashville Public Schools is not in support of that bill, emphasizing that it's important for the board to decide on charter schools because of the financial responsibility it puts on the district.
Register spoke to Channel 4 during Read Me Day at Charlotte Park Elementary school.
Former Titans Wide Receiver Chris Sanders, Miss Tennessee and Miss Nashville also participated in the literacy event.
