Female officer hit by combative suspect

Posted: Updated:

A Metro police officer said she was punched in the nose Thursday by a man she was trying to arrest.

Police officer Jaime Rice was on Dickerson Pike around 4 p.m. when she spotted a Toyota Avalon with an expired temporary tag.

Rice said she tried to pull over the driver, 23-year-old Walter Lewis. The officer chased him a few blocks to a discount liquor store where he stopped.

Rice pulled in behind him, but the situation began to escalate.

She told Lewis to turn off the car, but he refused.  She then asked him to get out of the vehicle, but he instead tried to put his vehicle in reverse.

Other officers arrived and were able to get Lewis out of his car.  He still resisted police, and started swinging his arms, hitting Rice in the nose.

Lewis was shocked with a Taser twice before they were finally able to take him into custody.

He is charged with evading arrest, DUI and assault of an officer.
