Hybrid wolves recovered after Stewart Co. escape

Posted: Updated:

A pack of hybrid wolves recently escaped from their owner in Stewart County. He sounded the alarm, warning parents to keep an eye on their kids and pets.

Neighbor David Hansard was particularly concerned about his "girls." He walked out of the house and saw half the pack eyeing his chickens.

"You know, they're big. I ran them off. They just kind of ignored me and left," said Hansard.

His neighbor up the street, Louis Watson, owns a bunch of them. They got out and a bit of panic set in.

"I called everyone I knew, 'Hey put your stuff away. I got a few out. Please don't shoot them.' I was heartbroken. Believe me, they're my babies," said Watson.

Watson said they aren't dangerous, but the last time they escaped, a neighboring dog got attacked and had to have stitches.

"Like I won't take a small child back here, not at all, because as far as a wolf is concerned, anything eye level is game," said Watson.

Tuesday afternoon, the last one in the pack returned, no doubt hungry for dinner. Watson feeds them road kill.

"The sheriff will call me and say, 'I've got a fresh one. Come get it,'" said Watson.

No one was hurt.

The TWRA said no one is in trouble. In the state of Tennessee, it is legal to possess a hybrid wolf.

Now neighbors are just worried about the next time.

"If you've got a breeding population out in the wild, there's plenty of game here and they could establish themselves. That's my biggest concern, always has been," said Hansard.

Watson said while his wolves do eat wild meat, he has never allowed them to kill anything, so he says people should rest easy knowing they don't know how to hunt.
