Gallatin furniture store engulfed by flames

Posted: Updated:

A Sumner County furniture store is a total loss after it was engulfed by fire Tuesday morning.

The fire began around 6:55 a.m. at Cana'anite Appliances and Furniture in the 100 block of West Broadway.

Police shut down U.S. 31E between North Water Street and North Locust in both directions as fire crews battled the flames.

"It's just shocking. I don't know how," said owner Lulu Alsadi.

The family who owns the business did not have renter's insurance, and now they have to move forward without their only source of income.

They support 7 kids, and the store was all they had.

"It's probably going to be harder to pay the bills and get groceries and stuff. That's going to be hard for us, because this is the only store we have to help," said son Rami Saleh.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe mattresses near the front of the building were fueling the fire.

The family had to give up a separate business several years ago, when one of their children was hospitalized for diabetes. Complications from the disease kept the family away 16 months, and they had finally landed back on their feet when the fire broke out.

Facing yet another blow, this family has to find the strength to start over again.

Fire investigators believe the may have started with bad wiring in one of the refrigerators that was for sale.

No injuries were reported.
