White County cemetery vandalized

Posted: Updated:

A final resting place has become a playground for vandals in White County, where damage at the historic cemetery may cost $50,000 or more to repair.

Over the last few weeks, more than 70 monuments have been toppled and trashed at the Cherry Creek Cemetery, and in some cases, the turn-of-the-century craftsmanship cannot be fixed.

Investigators say whoever is responsible could face felony charges.

"I'd say this, because the amount of money some of the tombstones are worth - and then you take a look at the other ones that are obviously dated back some time ago, who knows how much value those are worth," said White County Sheriff's Detective Chris Isom.

The sheriff's department is asking anyone in the area who may have seen any strange activity near the cemetery in recent weeks to give them a call.

"To me, this is the worst kind of coward, because these are victims that cannot fight back. And their families can't be out here to protect them," Isom said.

Officials did find one piece of evidence with a possible fingerprint. It has been sent to a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation crime lab for further investigation.
