SPARTA, TN (WSMV) -
The White County Sheriff estimated the damage to about 70 monuments in a local cemetery at around $50,000.
Sheriff Oddie Shoupe told the Sparta Expositor that the incident at the Cherry Creek Cemetery was discovered on Feb. 10.
Shoupe said the tombstones, many dating back to before the 1900s, were either broken or shoved off the bases.
Detectives have spoken with people who live near the cemetery to find out if they had seen or heard anything unusual in the area.
Investigators have also turned over a piece of evidence to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation crime lab for analysis.
Police have asked anyone with any information about the vandalism to call Detective Chris Isom at 931-836-3621.
