Bulger's Beat: Nashville man drops corporate job, picks up paint

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

When you discover a long career in the business world is starting to bore you, maybe it's a good idea to pick up a paintbrush.

That's worked for one Nashville man. When his 9-to-5 workdays slipped to 10-hour days or longer, Brian Nash decided to become his own boss and let his creative side shine.

"I do love colors. I don't know, they make me happy," he said.

Nash originally came to Nashville from Boston for music, but wound up in advertising and a few years ago chucked it all for the canvas.

"I can't imagine not painting. It fills so much of my time," he said.

Now in his daily office, he's not filing reports or schmoozing new clients. He's doing what he wants to do.

The only message his paintings try to send are "smile."

"I used to be in absolute awe of people who could do this. I thought, 'I can't do that.' Yes you can. There's no right or wrong. I'll never paint something that Rembrandt painted, but I don't really want to. I like painting what I paint," Nash said.

With no pretense and no search for perfection, Nash figures if he makes a goof or a mess along the way, that's okay.

"No, I don't think there's any such thing as a mistake," he said. "Obviously, it's not a mess, because I wear most of my messes."

Nash said his new gig of painting beats the commute he used to make each morning. Now, he lives in a loft in Nashville's Marathon Village and goes work downstairs in his studio.
