Women and Heart Disease

Posted: Updated:

Karolyn Hall is one of the many faces of women and heart disease.

Karolyn Hall says "I had my first heart attack in November 2011."

Then less than a year later.

Karolyn Hall says "My mom was like you are having a heart attack,I said no I'm not... Lets just say 24 hours later I was in the hospital with a full blown heart attack."

Karolyn had a second heart attack, less than a year after her first one.

For women the symptoms are more subtle than the obvious crushing chest pain often associated with heart attacks.

They include neck and shoulder pain, shortness of breath, lightheadedness or dizziness, and unusual fatigue.

Karolyn Hall says  "I just thought I had heartburn and just slept wrong."

But reality quickly set in.

Karolyn Hall says "I cried because I knew what my mom had to go through with her heart disease and diabetes."

In addition to heart disease, Karolyn has suffered from diabetes for more than 20 years.

She's had to make some major lifestyle changes.

Karolyn Hall says "The eating habits, you have to cut out a lot of the red meat."

Karolyn Hall says "More exercise, had joined the gym got into yoga, love to walk. I walked everywhere."

At just 43 years old, Karolyn has survived two heart attacks,... and says she is living proof that women need to take care of their hearts.. and pay attention to the warning signs.. It has certainly given her a new outlook on life...

Karolyn Hall says "I live everyday to the fullest now cause you just never know."
