Woman donates kidney to husband for Valentine's Day

Posted: Updated:

For those who think they have the perfect Valentine's Day gift, one woman has them all beat.

Kim Duncan says that in 25 years of marriage, she's never one-upped her husband in the gift department. But that was until this year, when she decided to give him something money can't buy: a kidney.

Few would consider a hospital the most romantic place to spend Valentine's Day, but in this case the couple's smiles all make sense.

Doctors on Thursday removed one of Kim Duncan's kidneys and placed it insider her husband, Thomas Duncan.

Before the operation, she called it the gift that keeps on giving.

"He always gives great gifts, and I'm always the one that's slacking," Kim Duncan said.

"She made up for it this way. I can't top what she's doing," Thomas Duncan said.

Thomas Duncan has already had two prior kidney transplants. The first kidney was damaged by a virus, and its replacement lasted nine years. Now, his wife is showing her unconditional love by giving him one of hers.

"This time when we found out his kidneys were going back out, I just prayed that if it's God's will that every test would go. And, here we are. It's God's will," Kim Duncan said.

If all goes as planned, this third kidney should last Thomas Duncan the rest of his life. With 25 happily married years down, the couple can look forward to another 25 or more to go.

"I knew I had a treasure years ago. I just didn't know how valuable it was," Thomas Duncan said.

At last check, the operation was a success, and the couple is recovering.
