La Vergne officer opens fire at car driving toward him

Posted: Updated:

A police officer in La Vergne shot at a car Wednesday evening as the driver was barreling straight toward him.

The incident was reported around 5 p.m. when police said they responded to a domestic violence call at the Cedar Glenn Trailer Park on Sand Hill Drive.

Investigators said a woman had managed to flee after she was assaulted inside a home, but before police arrived the attacker took off in a car.

A short time later, police spotted that man on Murfreesboro Road and began a pursuit during which the man turned back toward the home.

At that point, the driver's vehicle was headed straight for an officer who was caring for the female victim, and a police spokesperson said another officer opened fire to stop the car from hitting the two.

Authorities said the driver was not injured by the gunfire but later tried to commit suicide and was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center.  He'll face charges once he's released.

The case is now being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
