Storm survivor recalls getting trapped by fallen tree through ceiling

SPRINGFIELD, TN (WSMV) -

One week after 22 tornadoes hit Middle Tennessee, one woman who was badly hurt is doing better.

Becky Roberts was fixing a bottle for her baby when a tree fell through the ceiling and trapped her.

Roberts fought back tears from her hospital bed Wednesday while recalling the violent storm that uprooted a tree and sent it crashing through her home off Baggett Road in Robertson County.

It was just after 3 a.m. on Jan. 30 when her 7-month-old baby was crying and the storm that had spawned tornadoes elsewhere had knocked out the power.

"I'd walked into the kitchen to fix him a bottle where all his formula and stuff was," Roberts said.

The woman's fiance was in bed at the time, and so was the couple's 5-year-old daughter.

"I felt water dripping on me, and I looked up to see a hole in the ceiling the size of a basketball. I was on my way to get him when the tree fell, and that's all I remember afterwards," Roberts said.

The mother was trapped underneath the tree for nearly an hour.

Rescue workers later pulled Roberts from the debris when volunteers showed up with chainsaws to cut the tree from the home, which is a total loss.

Roberts has broken legs, scrapes and punctures nearly everywhere - and it will be months before she's able to get around on her own again - but she's grateful that her family is safe.

She said she's looking forward to getting married in September.

"I've never been through something like this before and hope and pray that it never happens again," Roberts said.

A fund has been established to assist Roberts with her medical care. If you would like to contribute, visit any branch of The Farmers Bank and ask for the "Rebecca Roberts Storm Victim" fund.
