Bulger's Beat: Sisters continue Arcade's peanut selling tradition

Posted: Updated:

Nuts and chocolate come together in sweet harmony every day in The Arcade area of downtown Nashville. The Peanut Shop has been the spot sweet and salty snackers seek out daily.

Some may remember the old television commercial slogan: "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't." Well, you won't find any "don'ts" down at the Peanut Shop.

Like two peanuts in a pod, it's two sisters who run this place. Kathy Bloodworth and little sister Olivia have been serving sweet and salty treats since 1989.

"I didn't think she'd follow in my nutty footsteps, but I'm glad she did," Kathy said.

Every day, repeat regulars and the unashamedly addicted come in for a fix.

"We look at them and say, 'usual?' (They say) 'Yep.' And we just get it," Olivia said.

Head inside and take a look, where the nacho nuts are still warm, the malt balls are mouthwatering and the chocolate-covered Oreos are quite delicious.

Kathy played "store" as a kid and always knew she'd own one some day. While the Peanut Shop may not be big business, it sure is a blast.

"You don't wear a lot of stress working in a candy store," she said.

It's not quite a mom-and-pop shop, but it's close. This is sis-and-sis.

"It's just a happy place," Kathy said. "Sister love."

The sale of fresh peanuts has been going on in that same building in The Arcade since 1927. Back then, it was owned by Planters Peanuts and Mr. Peanut himself, complete with monocle and top hat, walked the streets and alleys of The Arcade every day.
