Crime Stoppers: Seeking Clues in Cold Case Murder

Posted: Updated:

WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WRCB-DT) - Nearly two decades now, and the family of Billie Barnes still does not know who killed him or why. The Walker County Sheriff would like to help them gain some closure and close this case. "It's a puzzle laying out on a table and we're just trying to put these pieces back together," said Sheriff Steve Wilson. "But, we need the public's help in doing it."

The case has stymied investigators for 19 years. Billie Barnes of Whitwell was found inside his car, a '79 Mercury Bobcat along Old Lee Highway-Chattanooga Valley Road, the morning of January 31, 1994. He had been shot to death. "It was the side of the road," explained Walker County Captain of Detectives Steve Rogers, Jr. "Kind of a secluded area; just a couple of hundred feet from the state line in Flintstone."

Clues were few. Barnes was last seen at the 23rd Street Waffle House in Chattanooga, late the night before. The Walker County Sheriff's Office, and the victim's family have been waiting for the right tip to turn this case around. "Somebody that was acquainted with him, they could provide us some information with the last few weeks he was alive," said Detective Rogers. "We just need to try to really narrow down a timeline, you know, what he actually did that day before he was killed."

"You know, 19 years has went by," added Sheriff Wilson. "We'd like to ask that person to think about it, pray about it if they're a person of faith, and give Crime Stoppers a call."

Move this investigation in the right direction. Remember, when you provide a tip through Crime Stoppers, you never have to identify yourself. It is time to speak up, clear your conscience, and let Billie Barnes' family rest before another year passes. "If we can get just one or two little breaks," Sheriff Wilson said, "I think we can chip away and chip away and put the puzzle back together in this case."

What will it take to shake loose a tip on this 19 year old murder case? We're offering anonymity and up to a thousand dollars reward cash. Call Crime Stoppers: 698-3-3-3-3

Remember, an officer may answer the phone, but you will never have to identify yourself.
