State lawmakers are teaming up with health leaders to make sure there is not another deadly fungal meningitis outbreak like the one that killed more than a dozen Tennesseans last year.
The illness was tracked down to tainted steroid shots from a compounding facility out of Massachusetts.
Now, legislators have met with the Tennessee Department of Health and Tennessee Pharmacists Association to identify some areas where changes need to be made.
First, there needs to be a way to track down which patients received which specific injections.
And as for compounding pharmacies themselves, a task force is working on some ideas to make the process safer in Tennessee.
"I think there are certain areas where we can improve the safety of our compounding where we can improve regulations in Tennessee to ensure something like this can't happen here," said Tennessee Health Commissioner John Dreyzehner.
The state pharmacists' association says while all compounding pharmacies are inspected by a licensed pharmacist, they need more inspectors to help assure consumer confidence and are willing to pay more to make that happen.
