NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

When the Nashville Predators return home from a lengthy West Coast road trip, they will have a new sheet of ice at Bridgestone Arena.

Arena crews had to melt the previous ice surface before the circus came to town last weekend, and Tuesday they replaced it with a new sheet.

Team officials really got some dedicated fans involved, as they were asked to help paint the hockey markings and logos onto the new ice.

The fans said the 14-degree ice is even colder than one would think, and it's nothing like painting a living room.

"It dries very quickly, and the ice is really porous, so if you let your brush stick down there too long it's kind of like you put your tongue on the ice - it just wants to stay there," said fan Stephanne Dennis, who drove up from Chattanooga for the opportunity.

It's a three-day process to transition from the bare concrete arena floor to ice that is ready for a game. That ice is an inch thick and takes more than 10,000 gallons of water to make.
