ASHLAND CITY, TN (WSMV) -
Cheatham County authorities arrested a man who fled Tuesday after he was spotted breaking into a home by the homeowner himself.
According to police, the homeowner returned to find accused burglar Randy Lening inside the house. The suspect then fled the residence and jumped into a car.
Authorities spotted the car on Peter Pond Road and began trailing it until the suspect wrecked.
Lening fled the vehicle, but then tried to hitch rides with other drivers who called police and provided a description.
He was later apprehended after he was found hiding in the crawl space beneath another home.
Police and Lening both blame his problems on a serious drug addiction.
"I'm sorry. My momma didn't raise me this way," Lening said.
"If you do drugs, this is how you're going to end up. You're going to end up addicted, you'll go through all your money and then need more money. So you'll start doing things that you normally wouldn't do to get the money," said Det. Shannon Heflin, with the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators say they have arrested Lening several times previously, for charges including burglary and drug possession. They also believe he may be responsible for multiple recent burglaries in the area and may have even robbed other homes earlier Tuesday.
