A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper died Friday while on duty in East Tennessee, the department announced.
Michael Slagle, 53, was found unresponsive after crashing his vehicle on Longmeyer Road in Knox County shortly before 7 a.m.
THP said Slagle, a 26-year veteran, apparently died of natural causes.
His previous assignments included patrolling Campbell, Union and Knox counties, as well as supreme court detail in Knox County. Slagle also helped provide off-duty security for the University of Tennessee marching band in 2003.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
