School administrators carefully watched weather forecasts Thursday night with some schools in the South opting to play it safe and cancel class or close early on Friday.
Many areas of Middle Tennessee were above freezing by midday, but some slick spots still persist after freezing rain hampered the morning commute.
"It's not slippery everywhere, but there are plenty of slick spots. We'll warm up to around 40 degrees this afternoon, so any ice will melt quickly. Freezing rain will persist until early afternoon along the Cumberland Plateau, where up to a quarter-inch of ice could accumulate," according to 4WARN Meteorologist Paul Heggen.
There were approximately 23 crashes, including 13 that involved injuries, reported in each direction on Interstate 24 in Montgomery County between exits 1 and 11, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.
Police said one serious crash involved a 32-year-old pregnant woman who lost control of her 2004 Ford Explorer on an icy bridge near exit 4 and flipped several times. The woman was partially ejected from the vehicle, and she was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in stable condition with multiple broken bones and head trauma.
Drivers should be aware of hazardous driving conditions in Eastern Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau. There is heavy freezing Friday morning on Interstate 40 in Knoxville.
The TDOT smartway system reported six roadway incidents, 69 ice/snow covered highways and two extremely hazardous highways in Middle and East Tennessee.
West Nashville 12-Car Pileup
The slick roads caused quite a few crashes at Bull Run Road and Old Hickory Boulevard in western Davidson County on Friday morning.
"There were approximately 12 crashes before 7 a.m.," said Metro police spokesman Don Aaron.
Salt trucks responded to the area, but police said warming temperatures helped to improve driving conditions in this area.
No one seriously hurt.
Other road problems
Two serious wrecks were reported on Vietnam Veteran Boulevard at 5 a.m. Hendersonville police asked the state to close the road because of so many slick spots. The biggest problems are near exit 12, the Big Station Camp Boulevard exit.
Wilson County said ice was reported on most bridges and many back roads.
Putnam County police said many roads are slick. One car slid off the road while following a salt truck.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation said they had 40 trucks treating the roads in Nashville on Friday morning.
