Cops say gas station attendant may have been pushing pot at the pump

Posted: Updated:

A Murfreesboro gas station attendant may have been pumping more than just fuel at the gas pump, according to police. Detectives are trying to figure out if he was selling pot at the pump to customers.

It's no secret you can get some of the cheapest gas in town at Swifty Gas, 1110 Memorial Blvd.

"This is a great place, and they have very competitive prices," said customer Ginger Palmer.

And the customer service is second to none.

"I have to say everyone here is very nice, and I'll always gotten real good service here," Palmer said.

But a drug investigation led Murfreesboro police vice and narcotic detectives to the store because they had gotten word that one of the store attendants, Damien Wiggins, 22, may have been in possession of marijuana.

"I'm familiar with everyone here," Palmer said. "I'm a little surprised."

A lot of cash passes hands here when attendants pump gas and turn on the pumps for self-service customers. But cops said money wasn't the only thing Wiggins was locking up in the store's safe.

"Upon speaking with him he admitted to having a fairly large amount of marijuana inside the business with the intent on selling," said Sergeant Kyle Evans, Murfreesboro police spokesman.

A pound of pot was found in shoe box.

"It is unclear whether he was going to sell at the business or elsewhere or both for that matter, but he did admit he was going to sell the marijuana," Evans said.

The manager said he had no idea why his co-worker was even arrested and taken to jail. He's just hoping he wasn't pushing pot at the pump.

"We hear about people selling drugs at their places of business, but this may be the first where we had a gas station attendant selling the drugs even if he wasn't selling out of the gas station he did have them there," Evans said.

Some customers said they hope the actions of one person don't reflect negatively on the gas station and other attendants.

Wiggins is charged with the manufacture, deliver, sale, and possession of marijuana. He's scheduled to appear in court on the charge in March.
