Police: Man, 93, kills wife, 95, before stabbing himself

Posted: Updated:

A man killed his 95-year-old wife before attempting unsuccessfully to take his own life, according to prosecutors.

"Yes, I killed her and then killed myself. Why am I awake?" Harry Irwin, 93, allegedly told a Kansas City Fire Department paramedic who was transporting him to the hospital.

Irwin is charged with second-degree murder. He is in serious but stable condition at a local hospital. No bond will be set until he is released.

Grace Irwin died at the scene. She turned 95 on Jan. 6.

"Given the facts, a murder charge was warranted," Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said. "No victim deserves someone else deciding when they will die."

Officers were called shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday to a shooting at a home located in the 11000 block of Wyandotte Street, a neighborhood just north of Red Bridge Road and west of Wornall Road.

Kansas City police spokesman Capt. Steve Young said the incident appears to be isolated between both people, and police are not actively looking for a suspect elsewhere at this time.

The couple's daughter said her father called her at 6:30 a.m. and told her to come to the house at 9 a.m. She told police that her father indicated that her mother was dead.

When the woman responded, she found her mother with blood on her head lying in a blood-filled bed, according to court documents.

The daughter said her unconscious father was sitting in a chair with a knife in his hand. Her brother also rushed to the scene and found a suicide note, according to court documents.

"I killed my wife this morning," Irwin allegedly told a hospital nurse. "I tried to stab myself in the heart, but I guess I was too low and must have hit a rib."

According to court documents, Irwin was in the bathroom when he slit his wrists and shoved the knife up to its hilt into his chest.

Irwin claimed his wife had been "arguing and screaming at him all night and he couldn't take it anymore," according to court documents.

He said he couldn't remember what he hit his wife with but he just knew he "did her in."
