Low temperatures the next few nights will be in the teens, and if you don't prepare for the frigid weather, it could cost you.
Fixing frozen pipes can add up to hundreds, even thousands of dollars, if they burst. Calling a plumber can be costly, resulting in hundreds of dollars or more.
"There could be pretty expensive repairs where your insurance company can get involved," said Jeff Siedentope with Hiller Plumbing and Cooling.
Even your garden hose can cause expensive problems.
"The biggest thing is the small covers and taking your hoses off your hose bib. If you leave them on there, the water will go back into the house itself," said Siedentope.
A worst case scenario would be if your pipes froze and burst, causing water damage to your floors and the pipes themselves. Opening up the cabinets of your home to let heat in is a simple measure to help avoid frozen pipes.
For just a few bucks, you can also protect the pipes around your water heater.
"If your water heater is in the garage, you should make sure the pipes are insulated," said Siedentope.
You can find pipe insulation online for under $2. If you have a crawl space, close any vents to avoid cold air from getting in.
"Air blowing through is where you end up with most of your problems," said Siedentope.
Doing just a little work now could prevent big issues on cold mornings.
If your pipes do freeze, you can tell by turning on the faucet, and it's likely nothing will come out.
Next, try to defrost them by applying heat to the source using a hair dryer or space heater. If that doesn't work, the Red Cross recommends calling a plumber.
