Teen driver injured after crashing into Sumner Co. bus

Posted: Updated:

No children were hurt, but a driver was hospitalized Friday after a pickup truck slammed into the back of a school bus in Sumner County.

The collision was reported about 3:40 p.m. along Harris Road near Old Highway 31E in Westmoreland, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

THP investigators said a 16-year-old, whose identity has not been released, was driving a GMC Sonoma truck that hit the bus in the rear after the bus had stopped to let children off.

Nineteen students on the bus between ages 6 and 15 were not injured, and neither was the bus driver, but the juvenile driver of the truck was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center by LifeFlight with undisclosed injuries.

THP said the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed as it crested a hill and didn't have enough time to stop before hitting the bus.

Possible charges against the pickup truck driver are pending.
