Brentwood family selected for trip to view inauguration

BRENTWOOD, TN (WSMV) -

One Brentwood teenager is on the road to Washington this weekend for an experience of a lifetime.

Jared Stevens, whose face is familiar to many in Middle Tennessee as the wrestler who pinned his opponent in a recent viral internet video, has never let his disability get in the way of living life to the fullest.

He has cerebral palsy and likes the challenge of showing people he's not limited by his disability.

On Monday, he will be joined by his service dog, John, his parents, Phil and Lisa Stevens, and his four siblings, as they attend President Barack Obama's inauguration at the Capitol.

The group Canine Companions for Independence chose the Stevens family over nearly 3,000 other applicants for the trip.

"I thought dad was just joking," Jared Stevens said.

"He thought I was just joking, because Jared wants to ride on Air Force One and when anything about secret service comes up," Phil Stevens said.

The family has had to endure a seemingly endless array of paperwork to become approved by the Secret Service, but they say it has all been worth it.

"We're looking forward to it. The whole family will be a part of it, so it's great," Lisa Stevens said.
