SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -
Some local students found out just how dangerous distracted driving really is on Friday.
Tricia Dwyer admits she is always on her cell phone. But she knows using it while driving can be deadly.
"It's just scary that it can really happen. Everyone thinks that it's not going to happen to me but everything you do there's going to be an outcome for it," said Dwyer.
"We have lost people due to distracted driving. The thing that we're trying to prevent is for any of that happening again," added the senior at Swan Valley High School.
More than 600 students at Swan Valley High in Shields got behind the wheel of "distracted driving simulators" to learn about the risks first hand. The machines are connected to cell phones.
They send text messages to the driver - then simulate how quickly one can lose control of a vehicle when not completely focused.
The experience is part of the "Save A Life Tour." Speakers go to high schools across the country educating teens about the dangers of texting and driving.
Chloe Bero, a junior at the school, just got her license two days ago. She said she was deeply impacted after seeing real-life videos of the tragedies that can come from texting and driving.
She says if she gets the urge to grab her phone while driving, she'll think about the consequences and resist.
"I just think how my parents would react. The people that are left behind it's the worst for because I wouldn't be there, but all of them would suffer for it," Bero said.
Students were given the opportunity to sign a pledge promising not to text or talk on cell phones while driving. Most of the students who took park in the event signed the pledge.
