Former Rutherford EMS director dies of cancer

Posted: Updated:

Long-time Rutherford County Emergency Management Director Roger Allen has lost his bout with cancer.

Colleagues said Allen died Wednesday morning at his home with his wife by his side.

Allen served as emergency management director for 12 years, but his association with the department spanned about 20 years.

Allen retired in October 2012 after his health declined.

"The trust he had in me, I owe Roger a lot," said Rutherford County Fire and Rescue Chief Larry Farley.

Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess said the entire county government is "saddened to hear" of Allen's death.

"Roger has done everything possible to be positive and constructive, hoping he was going to beat this," Burgess said. "Through the course of time he's been off, he has come to the EMS to show his continued concern and to pass on all information he had. He was proud of building that agency."

Tim Hooker was appointed interim director after Allen stepped down.
