Bulger's Beat: Brentwood mom finds success as writer

BRENTWOOD, TN (WSMV) -

Writing a book is something a lot of people think about, and very few do. But one Brentwood woman who did is now having great success.

Southern fiction, beautiful antebellum settings around Nashville and a steady Christian spirit help define the books Tamera Alexander chooses to write, all from her comfortable Brentwood home.

A couch, computer and a cute dog named Jack are the constants in her writing life. Alexander kicks her feet up while making stories up.

Many of the fun, fictional historic romances she creates are set around Nashville's most famous Civil War era homes - Belmont Mansion and the Belle Meade Plantation.

It's all part of a writing life that began with a challenge.

"It was a dare from my husband. We were on a road trip back from Texas, and I'd finished reading a novel, tossed it in the backseat and I told him I think I could write one of these," Alexander said.

So she grabbed her laptop and got pecking.

"So I ended up sitting down and - 'It was a dark and stormy night' - started out writing," Alexander said.

At first, it was hard for her to find free time in the daytime with kids running around.

"And then from 10 p.m., once they were asleep, is when I would start writing. That's how I wrote my first book," she said.

Alexander has written eight more since then, where laughs, tears and a spiritual journey can be found as the pages turn.

Now a pro, Alexander has some advice to any writing wannabes.

"You've gotta be tough. When it comes down to it, you have to believe in your story - that it's a story you just have to tell," she said.

Alexander's books are available everywhere books are sold. She makes it look easy but knows writing a book can be frustrating.

She said that if you don't really want to write it, no one will want to read it.
