FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Efforts by The Salvation Army of Genesee County to provide area residents with key emergency services received an important boost recently, thanks to a one-year $100,000 grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

The Salvation Army's Comprehensive Emergency Assistance Program assists families and individuals with emergency needs for which there are no public forms of assistance, by providing a temporary safe haven to those experiencing personal financial crisis and providing them with the proper tools and guidance to make life changing decisions.

"Even though the local economy is experiencing an upturn, The Salvation Army continues to see large numbers of families in dire need of assistance for utility shut offs and evictions/foreclosures," states Bill Goodwill, Genesee County Business Manager for The Salvation Army. "The C. S. Mott Foundation grant award was an incredible surprise and a blessing to The Army and the families we serve."

In Fiscal Year 2011-2012, more than $1.5 million in assistance was requested from Genesee County families seeking help.

Goodwill continues by stating, "Hundreds of families throughout Genesee County will be helped this year because of the incredible generosity of the C. S. Mott Foundation."
