$600K grant allows Maury Co. to hire firefighters

Posted: Updated:

Six firefighters will be hired by the Maury County Fire Department thanks to a $622,662 grant awarded through the Department of Homeland Security's SAFER Grant Program.

Capt. Richey Schatz with the county's fire department says, "The advantage of having career firefighters will ensure that we have an engine responding from our station immediately at the time of a call."

The fire department currently has to rely on volunteers to either standby at the station or respond to a fire call from their homes.

Schatz says they will have a job announcement and application period where the hiring process mimics many other processes administered by municipalities throughout middle Tennessee.

Firefighters will go online in the first part of March, according to Schatz.

MCFD serves areas outside the corporate city limits of Columbia, Spring Hill and Mt. Pleasant.
