Distracted driving is probably something a lot of people are guilty of, but in Michigan, Gov. Rick Snyder is working to prevent the youngest of drivers from being distracted by the task at hand.
On Tuesday, Snyder signed legislation that bans cell phone usage for new drivers while they're behind the wheel. Those with a level one or level two license cannot be using a phone.
"You know, our attention spans aren't that long," said DeQuincy Adams, who was in a driver's training class Tuesday night.
Adams is 16 years old and said he has seen the horrors of distracted driving accidents in his classes at Carmen-Ainsworth High School. He said he believes a ban on young drivers using cell phones is necessary.
"Making a mistake could cost my life or others," said Adams.
Faye Dent is the owner of On The Move Driving School in Mt. Morris Township. She teaches young people to drive and says she always tells her students to put down the phone while driving.
"It gives them good habits, as far as not operating the vehicle, and also searching to text, that's extremely dangerous," said Dent.
The ban is called "Kelsey's Law," named after Kelsey Raffaele, who died while on the phone in Sault Ste. Marie at the age of 17. Her mother, Bonnie Raffaele, pushed for this legislation to move through.
